Breast reduction

Some women have breasts which they feel are too large for their frame. Often they sit low on the chest and can cause problems such as getting garments to fit without gaping. Exercising can be difficult due to the sheer size of the breasts. Physical problems including shoulder, neck and back pain may occur.

In such situations many seek to undergo breast reduction surgery. The surgery reduces the size, lifts and reshapes the breast to create a more harmonious silhouette.

About Breast reduction

What breast reduction involves

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia. Excess breast tissue and skin is removed, the remaining tissue is reshaped, lifted and the nipple is re-positioned to create a more youthful and proportionate breast.

Recovery

Many breast reduction patients chose to stay in hospital overnight. You may wish to allow 1-2 weeks to recover following surgery depending on your occupation. Mr Molajo recommends wearing a surgical bra 24 hours a day for 6 weeks. He also requests that you avoid heavy lifting and activities that cause bouncing for 6 weeks.

1 week: wound check and review

6 weeks: You should be able to return to most of your normal activities. Your scars will start to fade.

After a few months: Your breasts will continue to soften and feel more natural. Your scars will continue to improve over the next 12-18 months.

Is breast reduction right for me?

The decision to have a breast reduction is very personal but empowering. The consultation with Mr Molajo is relaxed but informative and seeks to determine what you want to achieve. There are situations where breast reduction is not right for a patient. Mr Molajo is always open and honest and will tell you if he feels reduction may not be right for you.

Risks

Breast reduction surgery usually produces high satisfaction but certain risks need consideration. They include risks common to all surgery - infection, bleeding and unpredictable scarring; nipple related issues including sensation changes, inability to breast feed and loss of blood supply to the nipple leading to nipple loss (very rare). In most cases the size achieved is close to what the patient wishes, but it is not possible to guarantee the final cup size. Breasts continue to change and will change further with time.
